ISBNs for print editions

This page explains the ISBN choices that may appear when you prepare a paperback or hardcover through Avelrow. It is practical publishing guidance, not legal advice and not a substitute for the rules of the relevant ISBN agency, retailer, distributor or print provider.
1. An ISBN identifies a specific edition and format
An ISBN is a publication identifier. Paperback, hardcover and ebook editions can require different ISBNs, and an ISBN should not be reused for a different edition, format or publisher arrangement when the applicable ISBN rules require a new identifier.
2. Using an ISBN you control
If you enter your own ISBN in Avelrow, you are confirming that you own or control that ISBN, or are otherwise authorized to use it, and that it is valid for the exact print edition being prepared. You are responsible for making sure the title, author, format, imprint or publisher information and other bibliographic details associated with that ISBN are accurate and consistent.
Using your own ISBN normally gives you more control over the publisher or imprint information associated with the edition and can make it easier to move the same edition between compatible service providers, subject to the rules of your ISBN agency and distribution channels.
3. Using a print-provider ISBN
Some print providers may offer an ISBN for an eligible print edition. If Avelrow offers that option for your book, the provider's own ISBN terms apply. A provider-supplied ISBN may identify the provider or one of its imprints as the publisher of record in bibliographic feeds, and the ISBN may remain tied to that provider's publishing or distribution programme.
A provider-supplied ISBN may not be transferable or portable to another publisher or print provider. If you later move the edition elsewhere, a new ISBN may be required. Avelrow will not represent a provider-supplied ISBN as author-owned.
4. A provider ISBN does not transfer your copyright
An ISBN identifies a publication; it does not by itself transfer copyright ownership. Copyright, publishing permissions and royalty rights continue to be governed by the applicable rights documents, Avelrow Author Publishing Agreement and any provider terms that apply to the edition.
5. Leaving the ISBN field blank
Leaving the ISBN field blank means only that you have not supplied your own ISBN. Avelrow will not invent, fabricate or silently assign an ISBN. A provider-supplied ISBN will be used only when the applicable print-provider programme actually offers one and that assignment is confirmed for the edition.
6. Distribution can change the requirement
An ISBN may not be required for every private or direct-only print use, but external retail or wholesale distribution can require one. The exact requirement depends on the print product, sales channel, territory and provider rules in effect when the edition is submitted.
7. Before approving a print edition
Check which ISBN path applies to the exact paperback or hardcover: your own ISBN, a confirmed provider-supplied ISBN, or no ISBN where the selected use permits it. Avelrow may hold an edition from distribution if the ISBN, metadata, imprint information or provider requirements are incomplete or inconsistent.
